‘A day in the life’ of a Data Services Associate with Sophia Johnson

Sophia Johnson joined Carbon in the spring of 2021 as Data Services Associate and she recently took a timeout to tell us about her role, things on her wish list and a few other snippets about what makes her tick…

.

What attracted you to Carbon?

Three things really – the people, the inclusive culture and the fact that what we do provides real value-add in terms of enabling clients to make better informed and timely decisions. It is  incredibly empowering and rewarding.

The analysis, management and sharing of high quality data has always fascinated me and has never been more important in our industry. As a young, dynamic company without the baggage of legacy systems and mindsets, the Carbon team is always thinking outside the box and our proprietary platform, Graphene, is a true game-changer for the global delegated authority market and we are continuing to build out its capabilities and user base.

Add to that the quality of the people I work with, the collegiate culture and the opportunities the company gives me in terms of my personal and professional development, it was a complete no brainer to join such an amazing business.

What’s the focus of your role? What’s a “day in the life” look like for you?

By way of background and to give a bit of context, we have 16 people in the Graphene team and I lead the Data Operations function of four people. Our focus is to ensure that the data that flows through the company is clear, concise and ready for our underwriters and external partners.

So for example, we work very closely with risk, premium and claims bordereaux as well as with brokers and coverholders. In addition, we have really close relationships with the wider company, including the Underwriting, Claims and Operations teams to ensure that the Graphene platform is showing what we need it to and that the data is coming through correctly. We touch literally every part of the business, meaning no two days are the same which makes my role so interesting and rewarding.

What’s on your priority list for 2023?

I would like to continue and build on the amazing work my team has done over the last two years – in particular, prioritising refining our processes and improving operational efficiency more and more each day.

On a personal level, I am co-Chair of our Social and Charity Committee and we have an active calendar of events from monthly socials and quarterly charity events. Carbon really does have a family feel and ethos – it’s part of our DNA – and we all pitch in with ideas which is great fun.

How would you describe the Carbon team?

It is a tightly interconnected team of people who are passionate about Carbon and the significant benefits we bring to the market. My colleagues play a huge role in my work satisfaction and motivation as a result of our collaborative and forward-thinking team and mindset. We have a great work ethic, an excellent work / life balance and a culture where people are genuinely valued for their contribution. It’s a great place to work.

How do you relax outside of work?

I am a bit of a social butterfly. I have recently signed up for yoga classes, I swim quite often, and I love spending time with my friends and family going for dinner as well as long Sunday walks followed by a roast lunch!

If your team had a theme song, what would it be?

“The Tide Is High” by Atomic Kitten. I say this slightly tongue in cheek as one of the main systems we use is called Tide.
